WITH A BLOODY face and a rumbling stomach, I let myself into my apartment.
Upstairs, I skip the shower and go straight to the kitchen to pull my friend out of the freezer and pour a double, bringing it along with a maxi bag of chips and a tray of ice over to the couch. I wrap ice in a tea towel and hold it against my right hand, sipping from my drink with my left. In the process of breaking a jaw, Iâm pretty sure I broke most of the bones in my hand. But in a couple of hours, my hand will be as good as new.
The vodka seeps into my system, numbing and distracting me. When thereâs a rap on the door, I donât bother to check who it is, instead peeling myself off the couch to open it, still holding the glass and the bruises on my face and shoulder on full display.
Parsons reels backward, taking in my appearance, his head shaking slowly. âWhat happened?â His voice is a shocked whisper.
Damn, why couldnât he have shown up tomorrow? I wouldâve healed by then.
âItâs nothing. Iâm training.â I lean against the doorframe.
âForâ¦?â
âTo be a boxer.â
âWhere? Who with? Give me names.â
âOr else what? Youâll arrest me for working out?â
His eyes flick to my glass. âI could arrest you for underage drinking.â
âGood luck with that. I could lodge a complaint for police harassment. Isnât it a bit late to be visiting?â
We stand there in a stalemate until Parsons says, âIâm worried about you, Tamzin.â
His use of my first name is jarring.
I soften. âYou know what? Iâm kind of worried about you too.â
His eyes flicker, but he doesnât respond, and I want to read his mind to know what is wrong with him, as much as I never want to be burdened with this information.
âDonât be,â I say eventually. âIâm fine.â
âYou sure as hell donât look fine. Whatâre you caught up in?â
âAre you following me, Detective Parsons?â
âWhy on earth would I do that?â
We keep eyeing each other until Parsons steps backward, shaking his head in defeat. âIâm here if you need me, okay? If you need help getting out of something, or anything⦠call me. Please.â
Tears spring into my eyes as I shut the door.
